Edguy With Dungeon 4/7/2004 - SYDNEY BOAT CRUISE
Edguy Boat Cruise Review
Sunday, 4th July 2004, Sydney, Australia
I and a few friends arrived to the Docks near the Australian Maritime Museum around 2:30pm, waiting for the cruise to start at 3pm. We got our tickets there, all my friends bought them before hand and I got mine at the door. Because they bought the tickets before hand they received special passes along with their tickets, whose purpose was to server as memorabilia, I managed to find one afterwards anyway, so all was good!!!
The boat arrived around 3:30pm and the gig started around 4:30ish. Before the gig we went though a 1.5L bottle of Bourbon and Coke provided by one of the nice ladies coming along with us to the show. The whole idea of a cruise was pretty unique and the first time that Edguy played at such an event. The closest for them was an airplane that never actually flew which was used during the recording of one of their video clips.
We spent most of the boat cruise upstairs and initially rested on one of the benches, enjoying the cool scenery of the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. I have to say that it was fairly windy but still warm, and some of us did find the wind to be relatively irritating. The Edguy boys were all around the boat, happy to sign anything passed their way and take pictures with anyone who wanted one. If you like Edguy this would have been a totally excellent chance for you to get up close and personal with them. I managed to get four signatures and would have got a photo or two, but unfortunately did not have a camera with me (DOH). I have to give another (DOH) here for missing out on all the other cool pictures that I could have taken. However one of the other people did have a camera and I am going to receive some of these pictures soon and post them online for you to enjoy!!! Therefore make sure that you check back here SOON!
I have to say that drinking on a cruise and listening to great metal is a fantastic combination. The fact that the whole boat was rocking really added to the experience. Dungeon was up first and put on a good show. I did not pay too much attention to them at the time, for no particular reason. When I listened in occasionally they sounded good and seemed to have a great time. During the song "I am death" they had a guest signer just like in the other show. I am not too sure who he was, but he really got into the song, and was head banging like mad. I am sure that no Dungeon fan would have been disappointed with their show on this boat; I sure know that I had a good time. I just wish that they started playing from the very start rather than some 30-40 minutes into the cruise.
Soon after Dungeon, EDGUY were up next and yet again we heard loud shouting from the crazy and proud Macedonian shouting either "GERMAN METAL" or "DEUTSCH METAL". This provided for a lot of jokes afterwards from Edguy singer Tobias and the Macedonian became the Extreme Metal Papa Smurf. Some references were also made to him sounding like the Destruction singer. However when the Destruction singer speaks normally the joke went on to indicate that he has a fairly feminine voice. Mr. Tobias also seemed to score either a red bra or panty or something early in the show from one of the fans, which I am sure would have impressed and pleased him.
I have to say that Edguy were exceptional at this gig. Even though the boat itself did not provide the settings for supreme sound, they sounded pretty damn good (or by that time I had way too much to drink). I really enjoyed their show and preferred it to last Saturdays Gig. The involvement with the audience was much greater and I loved how the audience got to dictate the songs that they played. This was such a close show that I saw about 4-5 people actually filming the whole thing. Live Edguy are truly one of the best bands around! In fact the Macedonian Smurf was so impressed that he donated his Plastic Sword that was crafted from the Bronze Era to Tobias.
Edguy played for around 1 hour and were warmly applauded and cheered on by the crowd. The played a number of their famous tracks such as fallen angels, wake up the king etc... Once again as they did in their last show they finished up with "out of control". They truly showed why they are one of the most popular power metal acts around and I thoroughly enjoyed their show. I also have to mention that the Edguy band members are some of the nicest people around and very down to earth.
I can also tell you with 110% certainty that they will return again in two years time, from the general conversations that I heard from a number of people involved with organising their appearance in Australia this time and last. I sure hope to see them again (and you can count on it) cause they kicked major arse. Hail Metal to Edguy!!!
Hail Metal,
OLI
Here is a scan of my Ticket signed by Four of the Five Edguy Band Members and also the special memorabilia pass that all the people who pre-booked their tickets received!!! I hope we can get some pictures of the show up soon as well!
