Blind Guardian - Fly

‘Fly’ is the teaser single from the as yet un-named new album from renowned German power metal titans Blind Guardian. Through their career Blind Guardian has progressed musically from thrash inspired power metal to a bombastic operatic orchestral style which has now become so prevalent in the metal scene today. ‘Fly’ follows on as the natural progression from ‘A Night At the Opera’ which itself had its moments but was not a ‘classic’ BG album like ‘Imaginations’ or ‘Nightfall’, arguably their finest moments along with ‘Somewhere Far Beyond’. The title track itself is a great song, which sounds a little layed back after some of the pace of ‘Opera’. The most noticeable facet of ‘Fly is the lack of the big booming chorus that Blind Guardian are renowned for, which works as a huge chorus would have sounded a little overkill on this track. The highlight is the second song ‘Skalds and Shadows’ (Acoustic Version), this is a new album track which reminds me of some of their great acoustic works. I am a huge fan of “A Past and Future Secret’ and ‘Mordred’s Song’ (well everything on ‘The Forgotten Tales’ album) and this new track is up there with those great songs. It will be interesting to hear the heavier version- I think it will have both the acoustic and heavy elements blended like the version of ‘Modred’s Song’ from ‘Imaginations From the Other Side’. The last track is a cover of the old Iron Butterfly track ‘In A Gadda Da Vida’ (yes, the song Bart famously re-titled ‘In the Garden of Eden’ by I Ron Butterfly) and they do a lot better job of this than Slayer did when they recorded this track for the ‘Less than Zero’ movie soundtrack many moons ago.

After giving this a few listens I can say that all Guardian fans will not be disappointed, I think the next album will be a lot more varied along the lines of ‘Imaginations’ or ‘Nightfall’ but with that big bombastic sound of ‘A Night At the Opera’. Cannot wait for the new album due later in the year. Hopefully the rumours will become truths and we will finally get the chance to see Blind Guardian live in Australia!!
