DENIAL OF GOD (Dk), Nocturnal Grave, Bane of Isildur, Wurm
The Tote, Melbourne; 21st July 2007
So I only really went to this gig to see Bane of Isildur, a Melodic Death Metal band from Sydney - 2 of their members from Black Metal band Chapel. I have been a fan of the band since I picked up their debut EP from Metal Mayhem ages ago so this late addition to the line-up was more than welcomed by me!
The night opened with Wurm ...not a lot is to be said really. Apart from the vocalist might have to think about investing in a slightly longer pair of denim shorts as for most of their set he had one of his balls hanging freely for most of the set at the amusement to the locals and influx of Danish attendees!!!

BANE OF ISILDUR played next. I liken this band to Melbourne's own up and coming act Be'lakor, and they back up that likeness pretty well with a great atmospheric and melodic sound. As is quite typical in this country, the crowd didn't get too involved in the pit early on, but a credit to the band, as by the end of the set they were getting a bigger and bigger reception after each powerful song.
After ducking out to the front bar to watch Australia get kicked out of the Asian Cup, I went back inside the band room to catch Nocturnal Graves play a very good and tight set of their crowd rousing brand of Death Metal - albeit in a thick haze of artificial smoke. Apparently 'The Tote' stopped the band from doing their usual stage antics of throwing rotting meat, maggots and the like into the crowd, but they still went off for the largest crowd of the night.
Denial of God finally came on at about midnight accompanied on stage with 2 large inverted crosses to give a 'true satanic feel' haha. They went alright - though the crowd was no where near as big as for Nocturnal Graves. The theatrics from the band were almost laughable to my 'un-tru black metal psyche', however set the mood for many a remaining fan. There was a bit of a fracas in the pit with some unsuspecting woman being knocked out! (There was also police attendance as I exited the venue after the gig).
So overall, despite testicle viewing and minor smoke inhalation, for a gig that I didn't feel I would enjoy a great deal, I had a rather good night thankyou very much!!
