Edguy - Tinnitus Sanctus
Once upon a time, far and away, in a land known as Germania lived a child of steel, a kind at heart wizard, known by a few close to him simply as Tobi. This wizard was not a typical magician, rather he was a poet, and a regular attendee at the lands theatre of salvation. He wrote many glory operas and times at the kingdom were very prosperous. That was until an evil minded Mandrake appeared out of painting on the wall and started burning down Tobi’s operas, and subsequently formed a hall of flames inviting all the nearby kings of fools to his new establishment, dubbed the hellfire club.
To a surprise of many Tobi failed to regain his stronghold over the land and his followers feared an end of an era was at foot. And so it were… Tobi cowardly accepted alliance with this creature and ascended into chaos. After many years of Mandrakes influence, this kind wizard was no more, no more respected, and quickly turned into a pathetic sellout who betrayed his most loyal of followers as he stood side by side with an evil mandrake. As result Tobi, or Tobias Sammet as he is better known, worked many hours and could only come up with substandard material at best that was perfectly conceived for mainstream.
The name of his latest material is titled “Tinnitus Sanctus” and is a continuation from “Rocket Ride”. These two works perfectly reflect just how hunger for money and power can negatively seduce you and change your attitude toward all you once believed in. Let it be official, both Edguy and Avantasia have now moved away from playing power metal and are moving toward melodic cockrock.
Tobias is and always was talented vocalist but his influence is too strong over the rest of the band and this has reflected in the current release, a slow paced rock album that is on par with Aerosmith. Seems the passion is gone. The band is too talented for this! I just hope Chinese Democracy isn’t heavier than this for Tobi’s sake when it gets released (if it gets released?). Nothing on this album screams uniqueness. It’s same all boring mellow rock we have heard from so many bands in the past. It’s not memorable nor is it uplifting, it’s pop. In fact many songs here share the same/short melodies which tell me that the band has run out of fresh ideas. “Thorn Without A Rose” is a perfect example of what isn’t metal. “Dead Or Rock” says it all really. It’s got typical rock riffs ala Van Halen and/or AC/DC. The lyrics are the only thing that reflects on from the previous releases; it’s still goofy as hell.
Apart from a couple catchy rock songs, I don’t see anything on this album worth your money. Stick with their old albums. “Hellfire Club” was the last great Edguy album that still gives me goosebumps when I crank it up. That is metal!
I know this review is a bit goofy in itself but if Tobias can do it, why the fuck can’t I?
