Interview with Hellcunt from Gospel of the Horns Interview questions by Decadent |
HM: Hail and thanks for supporting Northern Shadows [Hail Metal circa 2004]. How have things been going for Gospel of the Horns lately?
Hellcunt: Things have been slow and busy. We`ve been doing a few shows around Australia and writing new material. We recently played with nunslaughter and incantation. Plus some brutal Aussie bands.
HM: Your debut full length release `A Call to Arms` was released in 2002 to worldwide acclaim. Since then, there have been no new releases to speak of. When are we going to see the next release, and in what format can we be expecting?
Hellcunt: We are looking at going into the studio within the next few months to record another mlp. So hopefully it`ll be released before we head to Europe around October of this year again through invictus productions.
HM: After a very successful tour of Europe in 2000, you returned in May 2003. How was the response this time around? Was it better than last time?
Hellcunt: Both times we have been to Europe the response has been positive. Both tours had their good and bad elements. The hellbangers fest. In Germany was great the last time around.
HM: What were some of the best experiences in Europe?
Hellcunt: Sampling lots of different beers, meeting heaps of different people and bands, seeing all the sights and catching up with old friends from Australia. I have to say that driving in a stinky bus for 18 hours isn`t much fun though.
HM: Many reviews have mentioned that Gospel`s sound follows a similar path to early Destroyer 666. Considering your relationship with them, how do you feel about this?
Hellcunt: Yeh we do get this comment a little bit….personally I think its full of shit. I don`t think we sound at all like d666. and im sure they feel the same way about us. I liken this statement to slayer being/sounding like metallica. Not at all accurate. Just because both bands play the thrash thing, doesn`t mean that we sound the same. About the only thing that`s remotely similar is the drum tempos. D666 has there own unique sound and so does goth.
HM: The blackened thrash sound seems to be becoming quite big in the Australian underground. What do you think has brought on this genre to become so prominent in the Aussie scene?
Hellcunt: Bands like ourselves and d666 doing the Europe thing. Other bands have realised that it can actually be done. Australian bands don`t have to limit themselves to Australia despite the distance factor. If you really want it, you have to sacrifice a little and go for it. Even if it means spending cash to get there yourselves.
HM: Over the past few years we`ve seen Aussie metal bands being taken more seriously amongst the metal community. What sort of things do you think have caused this change in attitude?
Hellcunt: The talent that we actually have in this country. Naturally like other scenes we have some shit, but there is a lot of great bands here. We have had some great bands in the past as well which has kicked our scene in the ass as far as Australia being recognised. Australia has its own uniquely brutal sound as well, which goes down well with the euro`s and the Yankee fans. We have been getting a lot of praise from America of late. We would like to go there eventually I think, providing the funds will allow for it etc. another factor is that international acts are coming over here more often to paly shows and we have about 4-5 festivals going every year now.
HM: What plans do you have for the rest of 2004 and beyond?
Hellcunt: Ok… we were planning on being in Europe this July, but we`ve had to postpone the euro tour til October. At this stage we will be concentrating on getting new songs down. We are going into the studio the record another mlp as I mention earlier. We have 5-6 shows around Australia to do before then. Release the mlp and head to Europe again with bloodstorm and All Father.
HM: Can you tell us a bit about the lyrical concept in your music, and if any sort of ideology is depicted within it.
Hellcunt: C`mon, thought our lyrical content would be obvious. We are about Satan, survival of the fittest, and anti-biblical rulership like most other black, death, thrash bands.
Oh, and peace, flower power and smokin` weed man.
HM: Thanks for supporting Northern Shadows [HM], and we hope to see you terrorizing Darwin one day.
Hellcunt: Would like to play Darwin one day. Bit of luck, it`ll be sooner rather than later. Checkout the goth site…www.gospelofthehorns.cjb.net/
Cheers for the interview.
