Best Of 2005 Well, what a year it has been. A year that was shaping up to be somewhat medicore, has turned out to be a year of fantastic discovery, reinvention and for some, the redefining of preferential parametres. We have seen every genre make significant contributions to the scene, but most predominantly from the doom genre. Old favourite bands have rebuilt pride that once was, and are set to please fans of old and grow hordes of new supporters. New bands are making their marks on relevant genres, fusing multiple influences in ways not previously seen. The boundaries of what is classified as "metal" are being pushed by the typically avant-garde bands, but more suprisingly, also the rock-orientated bands! Death metal: A mixture between the melodic, technical, progressive and brutal appeases a broad fanbase. The brutal and technical being standouts with praised releases from bands such as Hate Eternal / Bolt Thrower / Nile and Stargazer / Crimson Massacre respectively. Black metal: Somewhat quiet for the year - as far as the HM staff and contributors were concerned. Few releases were noted as being stand-out, compared to prior year dominance across the community world-wide. Without the widley praised "masterpieces" of the past few years such as Watain's Casus Luciferi, Deathspell Omega's Si Monumentum and Blut Aus Nord's The Work Which Transforms Gods, black metal seemed to fade into the shadow of doom. However, the genre still saw some releases worth note including Drudkh's The Swan Road, Nactfalke's As the Wolves Died and Averse Sefira's Tetragrammatical Astygmata. Doom and folk influenced metal: A great year of doom with countless contenders for peoples favourite albums. Candlemass almost 20 years after their first release have produced a self-titled album, the previously unknown (to HM staff anyway) Mournful Congregation was pimped to everyone by HM contributor Decadent for its epic and slowly engrossing soundscapes. From here, we moved to a number of drone doom bands and the absolutely brilliant Irish contingent of Primordial and Mourning Beloveth. Thrash, NWOBHM and other metal: Too detailed to run through in totality, but again a broad mix of killer albums ranging from Slough Feg to Witchcraft and classics like Kreator and Judas Priest. The remainder proving that the metal scene across the world is alive and well! How this list was composed: Pretty simple really. Each of the HM staff members developed listings of releases this year. We then ran through the list ourselves and ensured a decent coverage of albums released. From there we began compiling our top 15 releases for 2005, with each placing being allocated a number of points. Once our lists were developed, we opened the voting to the public to allow you to give us your input and tallied the votes for these albums accordingly. So the winner, as noted below, is the one with the most overall votes - and that works all the way through the list to #20! In addition, staff have listed their choices for a number of other categories to provide feedback on the overall metal scene from our perspectives. Finally, we asked a number of Australia's top bands to provide their feedback on their own highlights for the year! So without further adieu, we present our "best of" list, for 2005! ~ Mike (misfit), HM Staff | | #1 NEVERMORE - THIS GODLESS ENDEAVOR | | | | No suprises here. Nevermore clinch the top spot with "This Godless Endeavour". Redeeming themselves after the mishap with "Enemies of Reality", Nevermore return to form with a truly killer album. Like last year's winner, it was consistenty voted as one of the year's best albums. It delivers in all facets - thunderous drums, passionate and aggrssive vocals and killer solos! More akin to the sound of what I consider their best work (Dead Heart in a Dead World), Nevermore have produced an album which can be enjoyed from any perspective. It is well written, genuine HEAVY FUCKING METAL! HAILS! Official Website | Myspace | HM Review | | | #2 KREATOR - ENEMY OF GOD | | | | 'Enemy of God' is the logical successor to 2001's 'Violent Revolution', bringing in that energy and aggression that 'Revolution' lacked, yet retaining the strong melodies that seem to be a part of Kreator's modern sound. There are killer songs and riffs scattered throughout, the drums remain consistent and utterly persistent as well. The relentless double bass is brutal and can keep some of the more boring sections from getting too tedious. It's one of the better thrash releases of 2005 and that reflects well in our list. Official Website | Myspace | HM Review | | | #3 NILE - ANNIHILATION OF THE WICKED | | | | Double drum kicks echo through most of the CD and blend beautifully with the thick heavy and often mildly groovy riffing accompanied by lots of bends and harmonics. Constant tempo changes within and between riffs makes it really standout. The drumming and bass lines are hard to be faulted. The overall sound is almost symphonic at times, and varies in tempo from slow, heavy and sometimes doom like to insanely fast and even heavier. The Middle Easter themes make you feel as though you are a part of a massive force (perhaps a hurricane) swirling between the Pyramids and across the Nile destroying everything within your path and occasionally just looking over proud and victorious. Top stuff! Official Website | Myspace | HM Review | | | #4 VANISHING POINT - EMBRACE THE SILENCE | | | | Firm in the position four, 'Embrace The Silence' begins and ends on a very epic scale with symphonic keyboards, fast paced drums and strong power chords held by the guitars, reminding us of Symphony X to a great degree. So energetic and deep in all ways possible, this album is such a big step in overall progression and evolution in the sound of Vanishing Point and if you have not heard this album yet, expect nothing but pure excellence in both quality and quantity. The wait was definitely worth it for this release that was put back many times before due to some past unavoidable setbacks. Pure brilliance in the end! Official Website | Myspace |HM Review | | | #5 PRIMORDIAL - THE GATHERING WILDERNESS | | | | The Gathering Wilderness was one of the most refreshing albums of the year. It grows on listeners with each listen, uncovering beauty in darkness, this album is a work of art, in all senses of the word. Captivating, heavy riffs create an atmosphere of an icy cold, overcast day. Eyes are cast out over the sea, lost in memories of the past and in contemplation of the future. Melancholic themes describing struggle, loss and ravage. Tinges of melody and comfort brought forward with passion, suggest hope and purpose. Totally unlike anything you have heard and will hear, Ireland's pride takes out 5th place in a truly brilliant style! Official Website | Myspace |HM Review | | | #6 OBITUARY - FROZEN IN TIME | | | | An intense come back album of this caliber to surface after so many years of inactivity prominently displays the passion and hunger that still burns unstoppably within the band. Here you can predominantly find mid paced to slower songs with minimal guitar solos (unlike Cause Of Death), but with very loud and heavy double bass blasts and chunky guitar riffs executed to perfection. John's trademark growls are out of this world. The band has spent the last few months touring across the US in support of this masterpiece with more European dates in Jan/Feb, and why not? This simply kills! This lineup has too much experience, talent and history to stay frozen in time. Official Website | Myspace | HM Review | | | #7 SLOUGH FEG - ATAVISM | | | | I think there is only one way to describe this band and album - fucking cool! If we had an award for the most fun music, it would go to Slough Feg Somewhat like Drunkard's "Hellish Metal Dominate", "Atavism" penetrates the mind and controls the listener in the way it sees fit. It is the ultimate form of sing-along, swash-buckling, beer swilling music. Melodies run wild, vocals are authentic and original, and the general tempo of the music is uplifiting and celebratory! YARGH ME MATEYS! Official Website | Myspace |HM Review | | | #8 DRUDKH - THE SWAN ROAD | | | | This is what Drudkh do best, contrasting sad, abandoned, hollow themes with tones better associated with happiness and hope. Guitars mimic each other creating an entrancing effect with slow tempo drumbeats, short passages of acoustic guitars and painful crying howls. Subtle rhythmic patterns accentuated by circulating repetitive riffs and warm/rich melodies playing through the foggy distortion... It is epic, crushing and teases us with vibrant tinges of melody amongst an otherwise anguished experience. The vocals are much clearer (although still remaining hoarse and growled) and more prominent. Official Website | Myspace | HM Review | | | #9 EXODUS - SHOVEL HEADED KILL MACHINE | | | | Another band making an appearance in the top10 for the second time in as many years is of course Exodus! Shovel Headed Kill Machine is packed with surgically sharp riffs and solos, machine-gun double kick fire at times and clever chorus parts make this gem reign supreme. The new virtuoso Rob nails every note with ease in his brilliant style. Lyrically the album is solid, brutal and lethal, but also quite funny at times. This may not be the lineup that released some gems like 'Bonded by Blood' and/or 'Pleasures Of The Flesh', instead, what they have released is an album full of old school thrash elements and is a great lesson in violence. Just look at that artwork. Wow! Official Website | Myspace | HM Review | | | #10 OPETH - GHOST REVERIES | | | | This release conjures up a seemingly new era in the Opeth camp with the introduction of a 5th member on the keyboards by the name of Per Wiberg of 'Spiritual Beggars' fame. The first track on this album 'Ghost Of Perdition' is really something to go by, with an intro that screams 'Opeth!' with it's obscure clean chords and unraveling with quite a heavy following introducing new musical dynamics with Mikael Akerfeldt's newly introduced whisper-like vocals. With said progressions, it seems that a lot of dynamics used on 'Damnation' is very evident on this album, one being the keyboards which can be very prominent and empowering in songs throughout the album. Official Website | Myspace | HM Review | | | #11 to #25 | | #11 Stargazer - The Scream that Tore the Sky | #12 Mournful Congregation - The Monad of Creation | #13 Bruice Dickinson - Accident of Birth | | | | | | #14 Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal | #15 Judas Priest - Angel of Retribution | #16 Hate Eternal - I, Monarch | | | | | | #17 Pelican - The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw | #18 Kamelot - The Black Halo | #19 Apocalyptica - Apocalyptica | | | | | | #20 Savage Circus - Dreamland Manor | #21 Pathogen - Bloodline | #22 Mourning Beloveth - A Murderous Circus | | | | | | #23 Arch Enemy - Doomsday Machine | #24 Helloween - Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part III - The Legacy | #25 Witchcraft - Firewood | | | | | | HM Staff / Contributors Top 10 Choices | | MISFIT | MILITIA | | 1. Crimson Massacre - The Luster of Pandemonium | . | | Best Album Cover: Mournful Congregation - The Monad of Creation | Best Album Cover: Impaled Nazarene - Death Comes in 26 Carefully Selected Pieces | | There is just something captivating about how simple, dark and mysterious this album cover is. Just look at it! Honourable mention should go to Elysian Blaze as well, although I never got around to listening to it. | | Skull crushing music, simple yet esthetically beautiful. | | | Best Local Act: Alchemist. | Best Local Act: Mortal Sin | | Toss up between Mortal Sin and Alchemist this year. Went to Alchemist because they have been involved with the community more and have basically been more active (as well as being a kick arse band). Although if MS can get Death Angel out here next year, they will win next years best local act, by a mile! | Successfully supported Anthrax earlier in the year and played a number of other great shows in recent time, Mortals never fail to impress live always giving us 200% shows. Look out for them in 2006 as they are just getting started with some huge things coming up... They are great bunch of guys you can ever meet. | | Best Unexpected Release: Mourning Beloveth - A Murderous Circus | Best Unexpected Release: Judas Priest - Angel Of Retribution | | Hard choice in that none of this years best releases were from bands I really knew anything about. So why did I go to the 4th album? Well, Primordial is epic, beautiful, captivating folk metal delivered in a black metal style. Not typically something I would like, but I think its style is so different, it is not so shocking that I rate it as the best for the year. Slough Feg is something I have gone back to this year. I have been listening to a lot of NWOBHM type music (including the masters like JP and IM). So it is not at all unexpected, despite me not knowing anything about the band. Stargazer is technical and melodic death metal, so that's again my style of music. But Mourning Beloveth was a longer shot. Death-doom, which when in the wrong mood, could have just seemed like a total waste of time. But rather, it was moving, depressing doom metal with genuine themes and powerful delivery. | Rob Halford returns! Enough said... get this now! | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Most Disappointing Release: Drudkh - The Swan Road | Most Disappointing Release: Demons And Wizards - Touched By The Crimson King | | This album just didn't work for me. I wasn't too disappointed though, as I didn't expect it to be that good for some reason, despite the fact that I love Autumn Aurora. Other bad news this year was the lack of news from Arghoslent and the fact that I didn't even bother to listen to the full new Opeth. | Not as good as their debut. I expected bigger things. Very disappointed. Blind Guardian is overdue for an album, and I hope Hansi will look back to his winning formula before BG release. | | Best Gig: Megadeth - UNSW Roundhouse Bar | Best Gig: Hate Eternal with Psyroptic | | See the review earlier in the year. Fuck the, "I hate Mustaine" club. Dave can still put on one hell of a show! With a killer set list and even a wickedly done cover of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid", Megadeth take out best show of the year. | Hate Eternal just kept playing throughout the morning with about 10 songs in their encore. Amazing experience! Read the review. View the photos. | | Best Aussie Gig: Mortal Sin / Inslain - Bar Broadway | Best Aussie Gig: Mortal Sin with Inslain | | 2 words - HEAVY METAL | Read the review... top show! | | Best Old Release Discovered: Unanimated - Ancient God of Evil | Best Old Release Discovered: Cruciform -Atavism | | This is some great older melodic death metal. Can't believe I hadn't heard of it till this year. | | | Highlight of 2005: Mortal Sin - Revitalised | Highlight of 2005: Aussie Metal Scene | | I was reflecting on the year around mid-November, thinking not a whole lot had impressed me during the year - neither old or new (except ofcourse for Primordial & Slough Feg). However, theyear picked up late (for me anyway). I discovered Unanimated, realised a few more cool albums had been released like Averse Sefira, Nachtfalke and Stargazer. But being the thrasher that I am, there is nothing better than seeing an old thrash band revitalising and getting ready to conquer at what times seems a stale and uneventful local scene. 2005 was just the begining - 2006 will be the year of Mortal Sin! | Australian metal scene in general in 2005 was as active as it gets. We were very blessed with the amount of international bands touring down here and was phenomenal to see most of them here for the very fist time: Angra, Hate Eternal, Megadeth, Arch Enemy, Nile, Motorhead, Dismember, etc... With well over 10 international bands touring, I'm left to wonder, will 2006 be as good? | | DAMIEN-X | OLIVER | | 1. Vanishing Point - Embrace The Silence | | 1. The songs from the new album are absolutely killer and it is very apparent that they are a result of hard work and phenominal decication. The year 2006 brings plenty of Mayhem & Destruction from these lads! | | Best Unexpected Release: Obituary - Frozen In Time | Best Unexpected Release: Hate Eternal - I Monarch | | | Seeing this band live made me realise that they are the true and mighty masters of Death Metal. This doesn't make them the innovators of the field but the album is very sold and a worthy listen. | | Highlight of 2005: Joe Satriani Tour | Highlight of 2005: | | | Realising how hyperative I can get and finding that i didn't even warm up when seeing Nile live. Being stunned by the fact that Children of Bodom sounded good but far more ordinary than I expected. Finding myself completely impressed by Tarja's voice. I've never heard a female whose singing voice was more beautiful. Laughing at the fact that I got to see Angra for 20 odd bucks, only because they are that unknown in Australia etc.. Seeing Megadeth for what was to be their last ever tour and realising that these Dinasours never die, brilliant show none the less.Arch Enemy who I expected to be very ordinary completely blew me away with their very professional and energetic performance.
