Ok, so I figure we have a now playing thread, so why not have a now reading thread? Most of us here seem to display SOME sort of intelligence and I can only assume that you guys (as well as me) like to read books. So write up what you have been reading, was it good, bad etc, even a good magazine article, start posting!!
Ok I'll start-
Race To Dakar by Charley Boorman
If you watched Charley on the Race to Dakar TV series then the book is soo much better... The mental and physical strength that is needed to just to contest the Dakar is highlighted in Charley's book. I have always admired the Dakar contestants and after reading you realise how extreme an event it is. Great travel story of mateship and adversity through difficult situations.
Just finished-
ZODIAC by Robert Graysmith
I read this one about 15 years ago and then got a new updated copy that was released with updated information to co-incide with the movie release. The book more focuses on the determination of Robert (who was not a journalist or police officer- he was a cartoonist!!) and the police force to catch the killer, instead of treading the usual serial killer books which focus on the criminal act and the gory details.
Just started-
Swedish Death Metal by Daniel Ekeroth
I'm about 1/3 into this, so far has been brilliant, heaps of great info and quotes from all that were involved in the birth of that scene. |

JRR Tolkein - The Lord of the Rings (Trilogy)
Raymond E Feist - Magician, Silverthorn, Darkness At Sethanon (all x 2)
Raymond E Feist - Krondor: The Betrayal, K: The Assasins, K: Tear of Gods)
Raymond E Feist - Prince of the Blood (currently reading)
So yeah, i can talk about any of those with you!  |

Yeah i've got a copy of it.. I started reading it once too. I found it alot harder to get into, given it is basically a history lesson.Even when i persevered through the first sections i couldn't do it haha. That was a couple of years ago though, and its on my 'to read list'.
Anyone read books by Christopher Paolini? (Eragon, a name i've forgotten, or Brisingr) |

If you have read this series you have to read the Daughter, Mistress and Servant trilogy written with Janny Wurts.
It's set on the other world that Pug goes to. Excellent!!!
I have been really slack with reading this year but some gems I have read are :
Alexander Solzhenitsyn - "One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich" (Excellent!!! I have started Cancer Ward but I have to go back to it)
Nick Cave - "And The Ass Saw The Angel"
Robert Low - "The Whale Road" (Viking story)
W.C. Heinz - "The Professional" (excellent old school boxing story)
Ernst Junger - "Storm Of Steel", I just finished this WWI memoir and it is fucking quality. The guy who recommended it said it's better that All Quiet On The Western Front and I would agree.
Just started Panzer Leader. Heinz Guderian's WWII memoir.
I have "Bad Blood: The Secret Life Of The Tour De France" sitting and waiting patiently.
Anyone who is in to cycling should read "The Death Of Marco Pantani" by Matt Rendell. |

I am currently reading "Tree Of Smoke" by Denis Johnson which is excellent.
Also "Iwo Jima" by Larry Smith. It is all real accounts by veterans from all areas of the services involved. |

I just finished reading "The Floating Brothel".
After the First Fleet arrived in 1788 ,they needed women to build the population, so 2.5 years later, the first boat to arrive was a boat full of convicted whores from England. What better way to populate a country. So I guess our foremothers were hard working women ,who did all their work on their back.
Nothing wrong with an honest trade. |

Luke,
You mentioned The Silmarillion as tolkien's best work. I agree ;the scope is epic ,and if I ever had to say that a book was beautiful ,then that is the one.But it is heavy going at times ,and I know of people who hate this book.
People who like The Silmarillion will probably like "The Gods Of Pegana" by Lord Dunsany written 1905.After reading this ,you can see where Tolkiens influences lie ,among others.
I am interested in early fantasy and I have what I think is every fantasy book ,from George Macdonald's "Phantastes written 1858 until the 1940's.
There were quite a few before Tolkien wrote the Silmarillion.
Feist's "magician" is a great read. I love characters that gain real power as the book progresses ,just like Raistin Majere in the dragonlance books. |

I very highly recommend Denis Johnson's "Tree Of Smoke" to anyone who is intersted in the Vietnam War. Excellent characters.
I also just finished Mike Carey's "Devil You Know". A supernatural horror/mystery type thing. Not something I would usually read but quite good.
I am now reading Graham Greene's "Our Man In Havana" and going to start Paul Theroux's "Dark Star Safari" which I hear is a brilliant book. |

I highly recommend "Dark Star Safari".
It gives an excellent overview of the state of Africa and how it has changed from the 60's to the 00's.
I am keen to read more of Paul Theroux's works when I get time.
I am finally reading "Heart Of Darkness" now and probably read Vonnegut's "Cat's Cradle" next. |
