Re: Do you think (Score: 1) by byrne on Saturday, March 04 @ 08:59:16 EST (User Info | Send a Message) | Well, this one seems to be a debatable issue for most people, although I see insufficient validity in the argument that it is a genre. It is far too loose a description for me to actually accept it as being a genre. Even the current genre's are not that well defined (i.e. bands can fall into and out of genre's fairly easily).
Why would you then go create such a loose "genre" like viking metal. It has little to no musical structure (i.e. typical structure) and seemingly relies solely on lyrics, themes and a even more broadly, the delivery of the music. To me, it is just something for someone who can't otherwise adequately describe a bands sound to rattle off, such that they sound like they know what they are on about.
I voted for the 4th option. Note that I refer to "versatility" in the sense of a band who often fall out of genre boundaries. Obviously there is room there to interpret that versatility in it's broadest sense is what drives / drove new genres. |

"Viking metal" does NOT exist. If anyone can describe "viking metal" as being anything more than music about vikings, or being loosely anything based on norse history, then I might consider it to be a genre.
Otherwise, stick to the actual genres which have proper bounds. |
