I had Coroner - RIP spinning in the cd player the other day and it got me thinking about bands that I thought peaked at their debut and had wicked initial full lengths. So, where do you thinks bands have not surpassed their first releases? For me:
Slayer - Show No Mercy
At the Gates - The Red in the Sky is Ours
Destroyer 666 - Unchain the Wolves
Danzig - Danzig
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (ignoring live in leipzig)
Tormentor - Anno Domini
Aeternus - Beyond the Wandering Moon
Drunkard - Hellish Metal Dominate
Coroner - RIP
Heathen - Breaking the Silence
Overkill - Feel the Fire
Exodus - Bonded by Blood
Enslaved - Vikingligr Veldi
Windir - Arntor
Agalloch - Pale Folklore
Amon Amarth - Once Sent from a Golden Hall
Amorphis - The Karelian Isthmus
Cynic - Focus
Astriaal - Renascent Misanthropy
that's all that is coming to my mind at the moment. im sure you will note things I've missed. plus, recommend anything you think others would enjoy. for me, all of the above are MUST have albums. |

I always think of Drunkard whenever this question is asked.
Opeth - Orchid
Destroyer 666 - Unchain the Wolves
Aeternus - Beyond the Wandering Moon
Nazxul - Totem
Mayhem - DMDS
Incantation - Onward to Golgotha
Well, those come to mind. More later. |

Apart from those already mentioned:
Dissection - Somberlain
Battalion - Into harms way (I know that they only have one, but its killer)
Mortification - Break the Curse
The Haunted - The Haunted
And wasn't Destroyer 666's first album Violence is the Prince of this World and not Unchain the Wolves? |

I definitely agree with Nazxul - Totem, and Amorphis - the Karelian isthmus, Mayhem-DMDS, Slayer - Show no Mercy.
Also Arcturus - Aspera Hymns Symphonia, I will think of a proper list when I'm awake and properly caffeinated.
What about best sideprojects and/or colllaborations?
Definitely Storm - Nordavind.... |

Nope. That was a mini-release, not a full length.
@ Metal_Bird: I <3 you. Barely anyone agrees with me re: Show No Mercy.

Drudkh - Forgotten Legends has 4 tracks and its an LP and Edge of Sanity - Crimson had one track and was an LP. So clearly track #'s have little bearing on what they are released as.
The release definition is based on both length of the album (minutes) and the bands intention for the release (i.e. full lengths are complete works, typically with all tracks written for THAT album, although there are times when previously unreleased material will make it in, or collections of old songs will be included.)
Anyway, what it boils down to is the bands intention. Violence is the Prince of this World was released as a mini. |

I wasn't necessarily suggesting that track numbers had anything to do with whether its an album or not, as in the case of Crimson. I was just trying to make a comparison that the next album had a similar amount of songs, and that a 7 track release is more likely to be called an album rather than a mini release. Demo's or mini's are generally only say 4 tracks long. And to an extent you could call it a demo as it was mainly sessionists filling in on the album, rather than a solid lineup.
However all the information i've read on it, calls it a debut album.
Anyway the bottom line is Unchain the Wolves is far superior to it, which is your point in the first place |

Emperor, Nightside eclispe - not the first album, (although the first with big-ish production and aimed for o/s release?), otw it would have been first on my list.
Or perhaps this also comes down to the semantics of what exactly constitutes an album, ep, lp, etc?
Alters of Madness (np, btw), what a brilliant album.. |
