Re: Do you think (Score: 1) by byrne on Friday, March 10 @ 03:27:08 EST (User Info | Send a Message) | How is it not black metal? It has an epic / mythological feel and the themes are entrenched in norse mythology (which is obviously carried through it's sound). Deathspell Omega and Burzum sound nothing a like, but people don't go calling Burzum ... fuck I don't even know what you would call it, other than BLACK METAL. Black metal is defined for the large part by idealogy and Bathory is consistent with this.
Also, to a lesser extent, it is defined by sound. Bathory again is consistent with the sound, for the most part, although Quorthon tends to be a little more dynamic in his use of techniques and the multiple layers of music added. But broadly speaking the sound is:
- epic
- raw and emotive
- vocals are delivered with a black metal-esque grit and passion.
etc etc.
There is no viking metal idealogy. Which is probably the biggest reason it's not a genre (in the sense that it lacks any musical bounds, so it would presumbaly have to rely on idealogy). Black metal has an idealogy, death metal had one (but is now more defined by it's sound, although some would argue against that). There is no consistent idealogy amongst "viking metal" bands. The only common thing, is as I said, lyrics.
IF people want to create new genres, they have to do something significantly different from existing ones. Viking metal hasn't achieved this, ergo, not a genre. |
